Just a Moment

Sometimes, a moment of devotion looks like this…

Highlighters at the ready, a candle lit, instrumental renditions of worship songs playing softly in the background, a cup of tea and reading through my Bible with ease, not stumbling over the words, or struggling to draw out meaningful epiphanies, feeling like the mysteries of who God is, are being peeled away to make way for a intimate familiarity with my creator.

But life is busy, so a ´moment of devotion’ doesn’t always (in fact, only occasionally, does it) look like this.

Sometimes, I feel like I can make sense of and grapple with scripture that is full of historical and cultural context to unravel and learn about, and sometimes, I find myself reading and humming psalms, comforted by the fact that the human experience hasn’t changed all that much, and God has changed even less (not all all).

And don’t get me wrong I LOVE spending intentional time with God, where I’m setting the table to sit with him, but God’s like that friend who would happily keep you company while you run errands and have the best conversations about life along the way.

A moment of devotion is also:
- listening to worship music on your drive into work
- that quick prayer before you walk into a room
- Reading the daily Bible verse on your Bible app and thinking about it
- talking to your friend over a coffee about life, and how you see God in it
- putting into practice those concepts you read in a Christian book
- listening to a sermon and letting it challenge you
- reading your Bible, even if it’s only for five minutes and even if you’re not making any notes (I promise, it still counts)
- Counting your blessings (even the littlest ones)

A moment is technically, 90 seconds. (BBC, Science Focus).

90 seconds seems a pretty achievable amount of time in a day to devote to God, so whether that’s a moment in prayer, or that’s a moment reading something, a moment reading a blog post, or that encouraging scripture on instagram, that’s a still a moment of devotion.
