Daughter of the King

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In the midst of my unpacking, reorganising and setting up home, I have stumbled upon many little treasures, and one of those was a small metal smiggle tin, with an assortment of badges, that I would have collected a decade or more ago. One in particular stood out to me. A cheesy cartoon girl with pink pigtails and in bubble writing, the phrase “GODS GIRL” and Psalm 139:14 referenced below it.

The 2000s was the era of ‘you’re the daughter of the king, that makes you a princess!’, and it was plastered on just about everything and was often the theme in Sunday school crafts and devotions. Gigi, God's Little Princess, by Shelia Walsh was originally published in 2005, and was followed by enough books to warrant a ‘treasurery’ collection and a special edition devotional bible. The 2000’s was an iconic era where girls identity in christ was unapologetically, undeniably and proudly displayed and taught, complete with bows, pink and glitter, and the stories of women in the bible were given a chance to truly shine. (and I think in a lot of ways, social media is the grown-up equivalent)

While I might giggle at the idea of being called a ‘princess’ now, it holds a profound truth that shaped my identity in Christ.

I know who I am, and I know where my power comes from, and it is not from within myself, it is because of God that I have authority, strength and power, to go out in His Name. (Luke 10:19-20, Psalm 73:26, Philippians 4:13).

Maybe the idea of being a princess brings up images of sparkles, tiaras and tea parties…. Well, here’s what I think the title of being a princess means for how we carry ourselves as women of God. It means dignity, and it means being an ambassador for the Kingdom. It looks like advancing the kingdom, it looks like giving generously out of our blessings, it looks like carrying yourself with grace and extending mercy, it looks like celebrating and glorifying God.

You are HIS!
Co-heir with Christ - Romans 8:17
Fearfully and wonderfully made - Psalm 139:14
Daughter of the Most High King - John 1:12-13

I probably wouldn’t don this little badge on the lapel of my blazer, but I definitely proudly wear the title ‘Gods girl’ with the same pride I would have worn this physical badge at the tender age of 10!
